Most of jscreen’s testing is performed using a saliva sample. However, occasionally it can be beneficial to begin with a blood test instead. Please read through the information below so you can make an informed decision.
When might it be beneficial to do a blood test instead of saliva?

When time is limited and results are needed quickly for medical management. Most of the time, saliva samples work just fine. However, approximately 10% of these samples need to be re-collected when the lab is not able to get enough DNA from the sample. If this happens, it could delay your results. The chances of needing a a new sample are lower with blood samples. Please note that test analysis is not faster with a blood sample, it just reduces the chance of needing a re-collection.
Who may benefit from doing a blood test?

1.
Pregnant individuals and/or their partners, as results might influence decisions about fetal testing
2.
Individuals with a current diagnosis of cancer, as results might influence medical management and treatment
Is testing on saliva as accurate as testing on blood?

Yes, the DNA that comes from blood is the same as the DNA from saliva, so the accuracy and results will be the same for saliva and blood.
How do I get my blood drawn?

Here are some options that may be available to you:
1.
Contact your doctor’s office to see if they have phlebotomy services available. If so, ask if they can do a courtesy draw using the collection kit the lab will provide to you.
2.
Make an appointment at a local phlebotomy center. Check Myriad and AnyLabTestNow for options that may be available in your area. Myriad will send you a blood kit and test requisition form, and you will need to take both to your appointment. The draw center will collect your sample and mail it to the lab in the pre-paid envelope that’s enclosed in the kit. There may be a fee associated with this option.
3.
Schedule an appointment to have a mobile phlebotomist come to you to collect the sample. You can check the PhlebFinders site for options. This service is contracted out and not controlled by jscreen or the lab. Unfortunately, we are unable to mitigate delays that may occur in scheduling/receiving phlebotomy services through this site.
