Hereditary Cancer Test
Know your inherited cancer risk before symptoms appear. The hereditary cancer test is an at-home genetic test that checks 63 genes (including BRCA1 and BRCA2) for changes that increase the risk of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colon, and pancreatic cancer.
Why Hereditary Cancer Screening Is Important
Knowing your risks can empower you and your doctor to create a personalized healthcare plan to optimize prevention, early detection, and treatment.

FAQs
What is hereditary cancer screening?
Hereditary cancer screening is a genetic test that looks for inherited gene changes that increase your risk of developing certain cancers
Who should consider taking this cancer test?
This cancer test is designed for anyone who wants to understand their inherited cancer risk, and it works for people of all ancestries. It is particularly valuable for:
People with a personal history of cancer
People with a family history of cancer, especially at a young age
People with multiple relatives affected by the same or related cancers
People of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry due to their higher rates of BRCA mutations
While the test is available starting at age 18 jscreen typically recommends waiting until around age 25, depending on family history and other risk factors.
How long will it take to get results?
Your kit should arrive 7-10 business days after you complete all registration forms. Test results are provided in an easy-to-understand report typically available within 3-4 weeks of the sample arriving at the lab. You will have an opportunity to discuss your results with a genetic counselor.
What the test covers
The hereditary cancer panel evaluates 63 genes associated with hereditary cancer and identifies risk for 11 types of cancer, including:
Breast cancer
Ovarian cancer
Colon cancer
Pancreatic cancer
Prostate cancer
And other related cancers
This is a extensive multi-gene panel that gives a comprehensive picture of your inherited cancer risk.
Understanding your results
Your hereditary cancer test report will show whether genetic changes linked to increased cancer risk were found. Results can be:
Negative – No mutations were identified in the genes tested. This significantly lowers your risk of developing cancer associated with the specific genes tested. It does not eliminate your cancer risk, especially if you have a strong family history.
Positive – A mutation was identified in a gene associated with higher risk of hereditary cancer. However, a positive result doesn't mean you will develop cancer. There are effective steps you can take to lower your risk, detect cancer early, and guide more effective treatment.
Variant of uncertain significance (VUS) – A change was found in a gene, but there isn't yet enough scientific evidence to know whether it affects health or is simply a harmless variation. It is very common to find variants of unknown significance.
After your genetic counseling session, you’ll have a clear understanding of your results, your risk level, and a well-defined plan for next steps.
Will my insurance cover hereditary cancer testing?
Insurance coverage largely depends on whether your personal and family history of cancer meets established medical guidelines (clinical criteria). For those who meet criteria, 95% of private insurance companies cover testing. This is a comprehensive multi-gene panel that gives a comprehensive picture of your inherited cancer risk.
jscreen never wants cost to be a barrier to getting tested. If the estimated out-of-pocket amount creates a hardship, financial assistance options are available to help.
